Statewide LED School Lighting Upgrades

As part of a statewide initiative to improve energy efficiency across public schools, MKG Electrical partnered with the NSW Department of Education to deliver large scale LED lighting upgrades. This multi-year project aimed to reduce energy use, enhance learning environments, and support the government’s long term sustainability goals.

Scope of Work

This project required precise coordination, site specific planning, and large scale rollout across metropolitan and regional locations.

Lighting Upgrades

LED lighting upgrades delivered across more than 150 public schools throughout New South Wales. Old fluorescent and halogen lighting systems were replaced with high efficiency LED fittings, designed to improve brightness, safety, and reduce long term energy consumption.

Site Assessments & Planning

Each school underwent an individual site assessment to identify legacy equipment, building layouts, and installation requirements. Tailored strategies were developed for each site to ensure compliance and optimise lighting layouts.

Installation Coordination

Installations were carried out outside of school hours and during holiday periods to minimise disruption. Work schedules were aligned with each school’s operations to ensure safety and smooth delivery.

Testing & Commissioning

All new systems were tested and commissioned to meet NSW Department of Education compliance standards. Final checks ensured reliable operation and performance longevity.

Challenges and Solutions

Delivering energy efficient lighting upgrades across more than 150 school sites required careful coordination, site specific planning, and a strong focus on safety and consistency.

Varied Infrastructure Across School Sites

Each school presented different electrical conditions and layouts. To navigate this, our team conducted tailored assessments at every site, adjusting installation plans to suit older infrastructure while ensuring compliance with Department of Education standards.

Working Within Live School Environments

Keeping students and staff safe while minimising disruption to learning was essential. All work was scheduled outside school hours or during term breaks. Clear communication with administrators ensured access was managed safely and efficiently.

Maintaining Consistency Across a Large Rollout

With so many different sites, achieving consistent quality and performance was a key priority. We followed a structured delivery approach that included thorough pre-site inspections, standardised installation practices, and rigorous final checks to ensure uniform results across every location.

Outcome

The project was delivered on schedule and in line with government safety and energy efficiency targets. Energy consumption has been significantly reduced across participating schools, with lighting upgrades improving visibility, comfort, and safety in learning environments. The work continues to contribute to long term operational savings and sustainability outcomes for the NSW public education system.
